2024 End of Year Letter

An Update from GHHS CEO, Spencer Batcheller

Dear GHHS Friends and Family,

During the 2024 calendar year, the Greater Huntsville Humane Society celebrated 55 Years of Advocacy, Achievement, and Appreciation. Our successes were due to the work of our dedicated team of staff, volunteers, fosters and our community’s allegiance to the GHHS mission! Through life-saving missions and initiatives, community and foster programs, adoptions, and expanding our efforts into neighboring counties, together, we championed the humane treatment of over 1500 animals in Huntsville and the Tennessee Valley!

In March, GHHS was able to open the Ronnie Hornbuckle Haven for FIV/FeLV Felines. This initiative, named after local, life-long animal lover Ronnie Hornbuckle, was an important feat as the Haven is the first of its kind in the state of Alabama! To date, we have received intakes and requests from our state’s rescues and vet clinics, along with those in  Mississippi, Georgia, and Tennessee.  In addition to Ronnie’s legacy, the Haven is also sponsored through the Mr. Kitty (Jim and Amber Haynes), Lily (Dennis and Jane Loeffelholz), Pogo (Anonymous Donor), Dr. John and Saundra Bailey, and to all the supporters who have donated and attended the fundraising events!

In June, GHHS in partnership with South Huntsville Veterinary Hospital launched the Monte’s Wellness Clinic, a low-cost routine care program for our area residents. In the first six months of the clinic, the veterinarians and volunteers have served sixty-seven pet owners, with a total of seventy-six dogs and twenty cats. These efforts would not be possible without the support from  Dr. Wesley Clendinen, along with Dr. Lisa Prendergast, Dr. Merrill Hudall, Dr. Shelby Agnew, Alisha Manning (LVT) and Rosie Chilton (LVT). Additionally a special thank you to our clinic volunteers and GHHS staff for their monthly assistance in preparing supplies and providing on-site support. Last but not least a thank you to the anonymous donor, Monte’s owner, that helped finance the first six months of efforts. In close relation to the clinic, GHHS was also able to commence a Spay & Neuter Fund thanks to support from University Kia and Pup Palooza hosted by the Orion Amphitheater, in addition to private donations.

Before the end of 2024, King’s Kitchen will move from the Annex to the back portion of the old thrift store, under the same roof as the Haven. With an increased need for the pet food pantry program, a larger space was needed. Moving into the new year, GHHS will be renaming the Pitch In Pets fund to the Maddie & Molly Medical Fund, thanks to a legacy gift from a dedicated advocate and volunteer.

The future of our life-saving efforts starts now – please join us in MAKING A PAWSITIVE IMPACT in 2025!

May hope and peace be with all of us in the new year,

Spencer Batcheller
