National Nonprofit Day is the anniversary of when the Tariff Act was signed in 1894 and gave tax exemptions for charities and nonprofits. Sherita Herring, a prominent public speaker, started the day to bring awareness to the benefits that Nonprofits give to their communities. So much so, that nonprofits were even responsible for 5.4% of the annual GDP following the 2012 Recession.
The holiday became annually recognized in 2017.
The three easiest ways to help are to bring awareness to your favorite organization by talking with friends and family members about what they do, volunteering with them, or donating to their needs.
