Position Summary: Works with CEO and staff, GHHS Board of Directors and Animal Care Committee to develop and implement GHHS policies related to animal care and treatment, animal handling and the adoption process. Follows governmental and other regulatory requirements. Supervises the daily operations of the shelter and facility including animal care staff. Works with the Clinic Manager and Animal Care Lead to effectively and efficiently operate the shelter and ensure proper care for the animals.

GHHS Responsibilities: 

  • Supervises Clinic Manager, Animal Care Lead and Animal Care staff; develops and maintains protocol for animal care to industry standards, provides leadership, mentoring, opportunities for professional development and progressive discipline if needed.
  • Supports front desk with direct contact with the public and assisting with problematic situations as well as handling phone calls when call volume overflows.
  • Maintains contact with Animal Care lead on rehome@ghhs.org, ShelterLuv, and petfinder.com, to assure prompt online responses regarding surrender or adoption of animals and general requests for information.
  • Addresses concerns and complaints of public and staff related to shelter issues.
  • Responsible for maintenance and repair of shelter and all buildings & grounds; schedules routine maintenance; secures bids for services.
  • Provides input to CEO for animal care, shelter and maintenance portion of the annual budget; reduces costs where possible while maintaining the highest quality of products.
  • Staff Liaison to Animal Care Committee.
  • Maintains awareness of industry standards and innovations through publications, attendance to seminars and contact with persons of equivalent positions in similar organizations and communicates such information to CEO, BOD, staff and Animal Care Committee.
  • Coordinates HHot DogZ Transport program with support of Animal Care Lead.
  • Coordinates special projects for volunteers or groups of volunteers on Saturdays.
  • Performs other duties as requested.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree or Associates degree preferred in Animal Science or related field; extensive work experience required in the field of animal care; minimum of five years management experience

or

Licensed Veterinary Technician preferred. Three years’ experience in a veterinary clinic, animal shelter or related field, handling, medicating, restraining and caring for animals; computer skills; organization skills.
